Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Nik Antropov registered a goal and an assist as Toronto topped Philadelphia, 4-2, at Air Canada Centre.

Lee Stempniak, Dominic Moore and Pavel Kubina also scored for the Maple Leafs, who halted a five-game losing streak and did it on the day they formally introduced Brian Burke as the new general manager. Burke is the 13th general manager in team history, replacing interim GM Cliff Fletcher. Burke, a former Flyers minor-leaguer, held previous posts in Hartford, Vancouver and Anaheim as well as in the league office.

Vesa Toskala stopped 28 shots for his eighth win of the year.

Mike Richards tallied twice for the Flyers, who dropped their second in a row after a six-game win streak. Martin Biron dropped his second game in as many days, allowing four goals on 27 shots.

Kubina’s blast 2:16 into the third put the Maple Leafs ahead by two goals and Toskala made the lead hold up, stopping Scottie Upshall at even strength and robbing Simon Gagne on the power play after a lucky bounce off the end boards.

He made one last diving stop on Philly defenseman Matt Carle’s shot with 3 1/2 minutes to play, and even though Biron went to the bench with 1:18 remaining for an extra skater, the Flyers could not get any closer.

Toronto got the game’s first goal with 5:15 left in the first period. Moore carried down the left side and forced Biron to come out of the net before stickhandling around him and back into the crease. Stempniak was there on the doorstep to stuff the puck in for his first goal in a Toronto uniform.

Just 35 seconds later, Richards followed up behind Arron Asham’s partial breakaway and slammed home the rebound for a 1-1 tie.

Antropov’s power-play goal 2:55 into the second gave the Leafs a 2-1 edge. Biron attempted to clear a dump-in up the middle, but the puck hit the onrushing forward in the face and it rebounded back into the net.

It was 3-1 at 8:43 as Moore exited the penalty box on a clean break and managed to tap the puck through before a sliding Biron knocked the net off its moorings.

Richards netted his second of the night with 2:37 left in the second to bring the visitors within one. While a man down, Gagne was tripped and on the delayed penalty call, sent the puck to the Flyers’ captain for an easy one- timer.

Game Notes

Richards’ second goal was the Flyers’ ninth short-handed tally of the season…Toronto has won 10 of the last 13 meetings dating back to the start of the 2005-06 season…The Flyers also suffered their first regulation loss in 10 games, dating back to a 2-1 defeat to Tampa Bay on November 8.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Sergei Samsonov scored the game-winner with 1:07 left in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in the finale of a home-and-home series at the Wachovia Center.

Patrick Dwyer scored his first NHL goal and Tuomo Ruutu also tallied in regulation for the Hurricanes, who rebounded from a 3-1 setback to Philadelphia on Wednesday at the RBC Center in Raleigh. Carolina snapped a three-game losing skid with the win.

Cam Ward was sharp between the pipes, stopping 24 of 26 shots for the `Canes.

Jeff Carter and Joffrey Lupul each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers, who had their six-game winning streak halted. Martin Biron made 27 saves in defeat.

With the game tied at 2-2 after two periods of play, both team’s played to a scoreless third and went to overtime. In the extra period, Samsonov ended the contest with just over a minute to play.

Matt Cullen banked a pass from the neutral zone off the boards in the Carolina offensive end and Samsonov skating hard, caught up to the puck on the left side, went around Matt Carle and beat Biron to the glove side to give the Hurricanes the win.

Philadelphia opened the scoring 4:07 into the first while on the power play. After some good puck movement in the Flyers’ offensive zone, Lupul’s attempted pass into the slot from the low left circle was deflected in by Carolina defenseman Joni Pitkanen, giving the Flyers the early advantage.

The Flyers had numerous chances early in the second stanza, including a shorthanded breakaway by Carter, but Ward was up to the task. The hosts then appeared to get a goal from captain Mike Richards about a minute and a half later, but the officials waved it off and assessed the Flyers with a penalty for too-many-men on the ice.

Dwyer’s even strength tally tied things at 1-1 with 5:00 left in the second. Pitkanen’s soft wrist shot from the top of the left circle hit off the heel of Dwyer’s stick in front and beat Biron between the pads.

Carolina then lit the lamp again 1:06 later when Ruutu’s wrister from the right point appeared to hit off a Flyers defender in front of the goal and got by the Philadelphia netminder to put Carolina ahead.

Carter, however deflected a Lupul pass past Ward with 46 seconds left in the frame while skating with the man advantage to tie the contest at 2-2. The game remained deadlocked heading into the second intermission.

Game Notes

The Flyers will play at Toronto on Saturday night, while Carolina will host Anaheim on Sunday… Flyers left wing Simon Gagne had a nine-game point streak snapped…Despite the loss, Philadelphia has won five of its last seven games against Carolina.

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Simon Gagne picked up three points on two goals and an assist to lead Philadelphia over Carolina, 3-1, in the front end of a home-and-home series at RBC Center.

Matt Carle scored the other goal for the Flyers, who upped their season-best win streak to six games. Antero Niittymaki stopped 27 shots for his third win of the season and second in as many starts.

Chad LaRose provided the lone tally for the Hurricanes, who have dropped three in a row. Cam Ward took the loss despite allowing just two goals on 26 shots.

In a 4-on-4 situation early in the third period, Philly took a 2-1 lead 2:05 in, as rookie defenseman Luca Sbisa fed Carle for a wrister from the right wing to cap a 3-on-1 break.

The Hurricanes flew at Niittymaki consistently from there, unloading 11 shots and just missing several more good chances, but the Finnish goalie stood strong in net.

Ward went to the bench for an extra attacker with 1:40 remaining, and after several Carolina rushes were foiled, Gagne hit the empty net with less than a second left to clinch it.

The Flyers took a 1-0 lead 5:52 into the contest. Jeff Carter’s shot from 15 feet was blocked by bodies in front. From the left side, Scott Hartnell managed to poke the puck loose for a waiting Gagne, who tapped it home from the right side.

LaRose evened the score 1:52 into the second, shoveling home his own rebound from the low slot.

Game Notes

Gagne extended his point streak to nine games…Carle’s tally was his first with the club and second of the year…The Flyers have won five of the last six meetings over the Hurricanes and three straight in Raleigh…Prior to the game, Carolina activated defenseman Frantisek Kaberle from injured reserve…Hurricanes forward Scott Walker left the game midway through the second period and did not return due to a lower-body injury…LaRose has scored in three straight games…Both clubs meet in Philadelphia on Friday.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Mike Knuble scored two goals, including the game-winner with 5:08 remaining in the third period, and the Philadelphia Flyers edged the Dallas Stars, 4-3, at the Wachovia Center.

Jeff Carter and Scottie Upshall also scored for the Flyers, who pushed their winning streak to a season-high five games. Simon Gagne collected two assists to extend his point streak to eight games (three goals and 10 assists), while Martin Biron made 22 saves.

Mike Modano had two goals for Dallas, which has dropped three straight and six of its last seven games. Marty Turco stopped 21-of-25 shots for the Stars, who entered Monday having allowed 70 goals, the most in the Western Conference.

With the clubs locked a in a 3-3 duel, Flyers captain Mike Richards stripped Doug Janik at the Dallas blueline and advanced down the right wing before pulling up at the side of the goal. He spotted Knuble coming late down the middle and the veteran one-timed the puck past Turco.

Philadelphia defenseman Braydon Coburn went off for hooking with 1:04 to go in regulation. Dallas pulled the goaltender to create a 6-on-4 advantage, but couldn’t net the equalizer.

Upshall opened the scoring on a nifty feed from Joffrey Lupul. Lupul skated down along the right boards before sending a pass through the crease to an uncovered Upshall in front of the net and he tucked it home 3:17 into the contest.

Landon Wilson’s first goal in nearly five years tied the game with 8:27 remaining in the opening period. Darryl Sydor’s blast from the right point did not reach its intended target. Wilson then gathered the puck in the right circle and fired a shot over Biron, who had gone into the butterfly prematurely.

Knuble put the Flyers up 2-1 with four minutes to go in the frame, then Modano evened the score at the 2:30 mark of the middle stanza, hammering a rebound past a sliding Biron.

Carter and his patented wrist shot restored the lead for Philadelphia with 5:38 remaining in the second. Scott Hartnell dug the puck out from behind the net to the sizzling center and he placed it in the far corner for his 15th tally of the season, tying Buffalo’s Tomas Vanek for the most in the league.

Modano then netted the tying marker with 2:34 to go in the second.

Game Notes

Carter has six goals in the last six games…Knuble (10) is the third Flyer to reach double-digits in goals, joining Carter (15) and Gagne (11)…Dallas announced before the game that forward Steve Ott will miss at least a month with a broken right hand. The club recalled forward Chris Conner from Peoria of the American Hockey League to fill the roster spot…Originally taken 19th overall by Toronto in the 1993 draft, Wilson spent the past three seasons playing in Switzerland and last scored in the NHL on March 16, 2004 as a member of the Penguins.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Mike Richards scored the game-winning goal 1:35 into overtime as Philadelphia rallied to top Phoenix, 4-3, at the Wachovia Center.

Richards and Jeff Carter broke out 2-on-1 from center ice with Richards handling the puck. He faked a shot as he slid from the left to right wing and hit the net to the far side as Carter provided a screen.

Carter tied the game late in regulation and added an assist on the deciding score. Scott Hartnell and Mike Knuble also tallied for the Flyers, who have won four in a row.

“It’s an important two points for us to end this week,” noted Flyers head coach John Stevens.

Martin Biron won his second start in as many days by stopping 25 shots.

“We battled hard to win,” Biron said. “When you’re down after two, it’s hard to win a game in this league.”

Daniel Carcillo, Martin Hanzal and Todd Fedoruk scored for the Coyotes, who have dropped five straight games.

Mikael Tellqvist took the loss despite making 30 saves.

After wasting an early power-play chance, the Flyers took a 1-0 lead 6:18 into the contest as Hartnell’s shot from the left side deflected off a Phoenix defenseman and trickled over the goal line.

The Coyotes evened the game on the power play with 1:10 left in the first, as Biron’s clearing attempt from the behind the net went right to Carcillo for an easy goal.

Phoenix went up 2-1 with 50.9 seconds left in the second period. After several Coyotes shifts inside the Flyers’ zone which saw multiple shots blocked, Hanzal managed to shoot one past Biron while being dragged down by Hartnell.

Tellqvist slid on his back and flashed the glove to deny Matt Carle on a Flyers man advantage early in the third, but seconds later, Kimmo Timonen’s point shot was deflected out of midair by Knuble for the tying goal at 5:08.

Fedoruk then gave the Coyotes a 3-2 lead with 5:14 left in regulation when his bouncing shot from the slot knuckled by Biron.

Biron was called to the bench with roughly 1:10 remaining, but before he reached the bench for the extra skater, Carter redirected a Richards feed for a 3-3 deadlock with 1:07 to play.

Richards was sent off for an interference penalty with 50 seconds left in the third but Phoenix had little offensive flow on the advantage.

“They’re a good hockey club. It’s a tough building to play in,” said Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky. “I was disappointed in the power play in overtime than them scoring late in the third. That was the most frustrating part tonight.”

Game Notes

Carter has 14 goals on the season, one fewer than league-leader Thomas Vanek of the Buffalo Sabres. He also has five goals in his last five games…It was Knuble’s second goal in his last eight contests…The Flyers improved to 24-9-0 all time at home against the Jets/Coyotes franchise and won at home over Phoenix for the first time since December, 2003…Fedoruk picked up his first goal since October 25 and tallied in his first game back in Philadelphia after being dealt away by the Flyers in 2007.

11/22-Saturday Morning Coffee

Posted on November 22nd, 2008 by Buts

Flyers play 3 games in 4 nights then had 4 full days off and now play 6 games in 9 nights. Seriously that is crazy.

I have a feeling Brett Hull is very close to making a huge trade that will blow up in his face badly.

Saw a question asked this week. All things being equal who do you take…Sid…OV or Malkin?

Last week I had Chinese food, Indian Food, I had chicken wings Wednesday so I consider that American food, Mongolian Food Friday and some Canadian bacon the other day. I don’t have the foggiest idea what that has to do with anything.

Is it just me or is the NFL missing something this year, something just seems off. There doesn’t seem to be any zing.

Antoinne Vermette I hope you didn’t buy a house in Ottawa, he’ll be the first to be moved by the Sens

I don’t ever watch reality TV and I hate it, I wish it would jump the shark.

The Leafs released Steve Sullivan years ago and he went on to a very solid NHL career, now another small RH player is doing the same. Kyle Wellwood is turning into Sullivan 2.0
Shockingling the Canucks have pudgy Wellwood eating lettuce, I don’t make this stuff up folks.

Is Eric Staal still at his drunken bacholer party in Minny? He needs to show up and do it soon.(he just did)

Dustin Penner signed a fat contract 2 off seasons ago, this past off season he just got fat.

I guess Sugar Ray Emery wasn’t the problem in Ottawa.

Ever notice Finnish hockey players have cool first names….Olli, Jussi, Tuomo and Ossi to name a few.

Who’s hoping for Richards to tune Avery Monday night, I think 700 NHL players and millions of fans, that’s who!
Morrow out 6 months, that my friends is called a death blow.

I’m pumped for the Philly/Phoenix game Saturday night. Two teams that start with Ph but pronounced like an F, what more could you want?

Fantasy Corner
I hope you took my advice and traded Dubinsky when you could

Biron and Turco are starting to get back on track

O’Sullivan is on the 1st line L.A.

This Ovechkin kid seems good doesn’t he, holy smokes.

It looks like Bryan Little is the real deal.

Remember when I told you guys Brodeur and Green would get hurt, maybe you should listen.

I wish the Flyers would get Jeff Carter a RW, he’s a 90 point player next year if they do.

The Sens are 29th in the NHL as of Thursday and they only have 4 players over 6 points, something has to give.

Conklin is rolling for the Wings and may split starts with Ossy.

I have a sneaky feeling Samsonov is worth a pick up right now.
Versteeg of the Blackhawks is over a point a game, he could be this years Patrick Sharp.

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Martin Biron stopped all 40 shots he saw against his former team to post his first shutout of the season as the Philadelphia Flyers downed the Buffalo Sabres, 3-0, at HSBC Arena.

Biron, who played his first eight-plus seasons in Buffalo before being traded to Philadelphia near the trade deadline in 2007, became the first Philadelphia goaltender to post a shutout in Buffalo since Tommy Soderstrom guided the Flyers to a 2-0 win on December 27, 1993. It was also Biron’s 24th shutout in his career.

Jeff Carter scored twice while Scott Hartnell tallied the other goal for the Flyers, who have won their last three games and have recorded a point in each of their last five contests.

Ryan Miller stopped 22 of 24 shots for the Sabres, who are in the midst of a season-high four-game losing streak.

Late in the first period Buffalo had a golden opportunity to take the early lead as the team had a two-man advantage for 1:15. Philadelphia, though, got some big saves from Biron and shortly after the final penalty expired took the lead.

Hartnell, who was called for slashing to give Buffalo the two-man opportunity, had come out of the box and was loitering in the neutral zone. Simon Gagne got the puck to Hartnell, who skated into the Buffalo zone all alone and roofed a backhander past Miller for a 1-0 lead with 58 seconds left in the first.

Biron wound up escaping the first 20 minutes without giving up a goal and making 12 saves.

Skating shorthanded, Philadelphia almost took a 2-0 lead a bit over five minutes into the second as the team had a 2-on-1 break, but Miller stopped Carter’s wrister from the left circle and Thomas Vanek was sprung on a breakaway going the other way.

Vanek was impeded by Hartnell, who wound up getting called for hooking to give Buffalo a two-man advantage, but he did get a shot on net. Biron, though, came up with the save and was strong on the two-man advantage to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Neither team scored in the second period as Biron stopped 13 shots while his counterpart, Miller, made 11 saves.

Buffalo was awarded a goal with 14:20 to play as Drew Stafford redirected a shot on net from the right side. The puck was stopped by Biron and it remained under his leg, but one of the officials on the ice thought it went over the goal line. Extensive replays showed that the puck didn’t come close to crossing the line and the goal was disallowed.

About four minutes later, Carter made it a 2-0 game as he picked up a clearing attempt in the Buffalo zone and from the right slot fired a laser into the right corner that Miller didn’t even react to.

Carter’s empty-netter with one minute to go accounted for the final score.
